WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - Israel allegedly planned to target senior Iranian officials during an Iranian delegation's visit to Islamabad for peace talks, according to a report by The New York Times.

The report claimed that the alleged plot involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who were among the country's top negotiators.

According to the newspaper, the US administration, concerned about the possibility of an Israeli operation, reportedly conveyed a warning to Iran in advance through intermediaries in several regional countries.

The report further stated that during the Iranian delegation's visit to Islamabad in April, Iranian officials sought assurances from US officials—through Pakistani and Qatari mediators—that members of the delegation would not be targeted.

The New York Times also reported that Pakistan Air Force fighter jets escorted the Iranian delegation's aircraft throughout its journey from Iran to Pakistan and on its return flight.

According to the report, while the delegation was returning to Iran, Iranian officials received intelligence indicating that Israeli aircraft had entered Iranian airspace from Iraq.

The information was immediately relayed to the delegation's aircraft, which was diverted to Mashhad Airport as a precautionary measure.
