Summary Pope Leo XIV urges US-Iran dialogue, highlights humanitarian concerns, calls for peace efforts, migrant rights, and global cooperation amid ongoing regional tensions.

ROME (Web Desk) - Pope Leo XIV has urged the United States and Iran to continue peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, saying the crisis has deeply affected innocent populations in Iran.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump issued a lengthy critical statement directed at the Pope, who has previously been outspoken in his criticism of US and Israeli military actions in Iran.

Speaking on his return flight to Rome after a tour of four African countries, the Pope said he would continue to encourage dialogue for peace so that all parties make every possible effort to promote stability, end the risk of war, and respect international law.

He further stated that efforts should focus on building a culture of peace and finding solutions rooted in harmony rather than hatred and division.

The Pope also shared that he keeps a photograph of a Muslim child from Lebanon, whom he met during a previous visit. He said the child was seen holding a “Welcome Pope Leo” placard and was later killed during the recent phase of conflict.

Expressing concern over the treatment of refugees and migrants, he said they are often treated worse than pets and emphasized that they are human beings who deserve dignity and humane treatment.

He called on wealthy nations to support the development and welfare of poorer countries to reduce forced migration, adding that while states have the right to protect their borders, the root causes of migration must be addressed.

The Catholic leader reaffirmed that he will continue to speak out against injustice and loss of life, and will keep working for peace, dialogue, and global cooperation.
