Summary Russia and Iran maintain close diplomatic contact amid regional tensions, with leaders and ministers continuing talks after ceasefire developments and ongoing negotiations.

MOSCOW (Shahid Ghumman) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have maintained close contact, with both leaders holding three telephone conversations following reported US and Israeli military actions against Iran.

Iran’s Ambassador in Moscow, Kazem Jalali, told reporters that political relations between the two countries are also continuing within the framework of international organizations, while communication between the two presidents remains strong.

He added that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also maintain an effective working relationship, further strengthening bilateral ties.

According to the Iranian envoy, on 28 February the United States and Israel launched large-scale military operations against Iran, after which tensions in the region escalated.

On 7 April, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Tehran; however, despite several rounds of talks, no long-term agreement has been reached.

Iranian officials stated that during the 40-day conflict, a total of 3,375 Iranian civilians were killed in US and Israeli strikes.

On 21 April, the US President indicated an extension of the ceasefire, but Iranian state media reported that Tehran does not intend to accept this unilateral extension and will prioritize its national interests.
