SRINAGAR (Dunya News) - It has been 31 years since the Indian army launched a bloodbath in Bijbehara.
On Oct 22, 1993, the Indian army massacred 51 Kashmiris in District Anant Naag.
According to historical records, the Border Security Force’s 74th Battalion established a perimeter around the Hazratbal shrine.
Approximately 10,000 worshippers had gathered at the Bijbehara Jamia Masjid for Friday prayers.
Indiscriminate firing led to the killing of 51 Kashmiris as well as 200 were injured.
Also, those coming in the aid of medical and paramedical staff were also targeted. In order to save their face, the Indian government did not allow the media to cover the incident.
According to the HRW, the Indian government made an excuse of firing in their defence.
Since 31 years, the people of Bijbehara have been awaiting justice.
In 2007, an Indian court offered compensation to the victims' families, which was declined.
