Australia expelled Indian spies targeting defence and security
(Web Desk) – Australia quietly expelled four Indian spies for targeting defence technology, politicians, and airport security, according to a report by Australia's national broadcaster ABC.
Despite strong public ties between Canberra and New Delhi, Australian officials discovered Indian espionage activities in 2020. These spies aimed to access sensitive information on defense technology, security protocols, and former and current politicians, and monitored the Indian Australian community.
In 2021, Australian intelligence head Mike Burgess announced the discovery of a “nest of spies” without naming India. In response, Australia discreetly expelled at least four Indian agents posing as diplomats. Burgess confirmed the agents developed ties with politicians and state police, and sought classified information on airport security.
ABC reports that Australia kept the expulsions quiet to avoid embarrassing the Modi government. Greens Senator David Shoebridge argued for publicly condemning India, emphasizing a need for honest relations and support for diaspora communities.
The investigation also noted threats against Australian Sikh activists by Indian authorities, including the assassination of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India blocked access to a related ABC report, and denies the accusations.
