KOLKATA (Daily Dunya) - West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded the arrest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi .

The chief minister says that Modi does not have any understanding of Indian politics.

Banerjee pronounced that Indian is undergoing an emergency situation whereas the political parties are afraid but do not raise their voice.

While criticizing Modi, the chief minister asserted that Modi deserves to be detained while the public will teach him a lesson.

She urged the people to take to streets against the currency shortage.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi shocked the country on November 8 by abolishing 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, which accounted for 86 percent of the cash in circulation.

The so-called "demonetisation" was designed to crush India s huge shadow economy, increase tax revenues and promote the use of bank accounts and digital transactions, but perceptions that the ambitious operation was botched have hurt Modi s standing and has brought India’s cash economy to a virtual standstill.

Millions of Indians were forced to queue outside banks for hours to deposit old money and withdraw as much new currency as was permitted, causing widespread anger and raising concerns about India s economic growth in the current quarter.

The government and the Reserve Bank of India have since taken a slew of measures to ease the pain from its measures.

While Modi has introduced several major reforms to Asia s third largest economy, the cash ban is seen as his biggest political gamble to date.
