JAIPUR (Web Desk) – A Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) MLA from Rajasthan on Thursday has termed Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as a ‘traitor’ and suggested that he should be hanged and shot for taking part in the protest held at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The MLA Kailash Chaudhary has also sought an apology and resignation from Rahul Gandhi.

According to The Indian Express, the MLA has said that, “Some people…raised slogans praising Afzal Guru, about breaking India and of Pakistan Zindabad…and if Rahul Gandhi, who is called the Congress’ rajkumar, goes and sides with these people…stands with them and supports them…it is treason.”

“Rahul Gandhi is a traitor…such a traitor should be punished…should be hanged …and shot,” he added.

The MLA while speaking to the newspaper owned up his statement, “Yes, I said it. If he goes and supports such anti-national people…he should be shot. I am a nationalist and if anyone raises a finger at Bharat Mata, I will not tolerate it.”

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on Friday for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans at a rally called to protest against a Kashmiri leader’s execution three years ago.

The arrest of the student union leader has reignited a row over freedom of expression in India, where some rights campaigners say the Hindu nationalist government is using the British-era sedition law to clamp down on dissent.

Kumar denies he was among those chanting anti-India slogans at last Tuesday’s rally to mark the 2013 hanging of Kashmiri leader Mohammed Afzal Guru over a deadly 2001 attack on the Indian parliament.

Protests against Guru’s execution have regularly been held in Kashmir, where many believe he was not given a fair trial. Guru always denied plotting the attack, which was carried out by Kashmiri militants.
