Sanctions on Iran in few weeks: Obama
Updated on

Summary

US President Barack Obama maintained that a new push towards international sanctions against Iran is moving along fairly quickly and could be completed in the next few weeks, while China and Brazil opposed the move.During a briefing in the White House, Obama alleged despite their posturing that their (Iran) nuclear power is only for civilian use only, in fact they continue to pursue a course leading to weaponization. He hailed Russias concern over the 20 percent uranium enrichment on part of Iran.On the other hand, China had earlier said that it would not endorse Wests sanctions on Iran, which drew Obamas flak, who termed Chinas reaction as unrealistic in this regard. Meanwhile, Brazil observed that the embargoes would not help address the US concerns. The Brazilian foreign minister said that Iran was a big state and as such it has got right to resort to uranium enrichment for civilian use, adding that the best way to resolve the issue lied in dialogue.
