At least six people were killed in heavy rains that caused massive traffic problems in Sao Paulo, Brazils largest city, said officials. In the last few hours, it has rained in Sao Paulo half the total amount originally forecast for the entire month of December, a situation that has loosened hillsides in several sectors of the city, leading to landslides, and has caused the Tiete River to overflow, flooding the heavily traveled avenue that runs along its bank. The fire department said that in the town of Santana de Parnaiba, which forms part of the Sao Paulo metropolitan area, four brothers between 7 and 18 years old were buried by a mudslide that destroyed their home. In some areas, the waters of the Tiete River covered the entire street, blocking traffic completely and leaving thousands of motorists trapped in traffic tie-ups that stretched for kilometers.
