Uttar Pardesh govt fully responsible for Babri mosque demolition: Chidambaram

Summary

India's Home Minister told lower house of parliament on Tuesday that the former Hindu nationalist regime of northern Uttar Pradesh state misled the then federal government and the nation on the Babri mosque demolition. Making a statement on the Liberhan Commission report that probed the incidents leading to the demolition of Babri Masjid in India's northern Ayodhya city, Palaniappan Chidambaram said the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government's stand was patently false. It is obvious that the promises held by the BJP (main opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party) were completely false and made with the sole intention of misleading the central (federal) government and the entire country, he said. On the then Prime Minister and Congress leader Narasimha Rao, Chidambaram said that Rao made a bad political judgement by trusting the BJP and it cost him the government. The government of the day made a wrong political judgement. Looking back I can say it was a wrong political judgement. Mr Narashima Rao paid the price for making that judgement. The Congress party paid the price for that political judgement and the fact is a wrong political judgement induced by lies and false promises made by the BJP, he said.
