At least eight school students died when the boat in which they were sailing capsized in Malappuram district of India's southern Kerala state.Senior secondary students of S S Higher Secondary School at Moorkanad, all the victims were crossing river to return home at Areakode. The deceased include one-girl and seven boys. Sand mining workers rescued several students. Moorkanad is also connected to Areakode via road but ferry service was being used to save time. Areakode is four kilometres away via road from Moorkanad and ferry service reduces the distance.A massive search operation was launched after initial reports that two children were missing. Injured students were immediately taken to the nearby local hospital. The accident occurred barely a month after state's worst tragedy on September 30, when a double-decker boat with tourists capsized in Thekkady Lake, claiming 45 lives.
