Summary

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei said that nuclear power is experiencing a renaissance and that 60 countries are keen to introduce nuclear power. Nuclear power has become synonymous with advances in science and technology, in some perverse way Iran made it attractive, but also climate change of course, fluctuation of energy prices, fossil fuel energy prices, energy security, so a lot of countries are looking at it, said ElBaradei. Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations, ElBaradei said that nuclear weapons are considered an asset by many countries and insurance against potential attacks from more powerful nations such as the United States. He said that it is important to change this positive attitude toward nuclear arms. ElBaradei believes that the answer to resolving nuclear issues is through dialogue, adding that the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the U.S. and its allies was under false pretexts, was unforgivable and responsible for more than a million lost lives. Iran could be the door to a stable Middle East, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Syria Lebanon, in the Palestinian Territory, and also it could be a source of aggravation of the situation. Iran needs the U.S. badly in terms of technology, in terms of integration, trade, what have you, so how to get the two powers engaged?, said ElBaradei.
