(Web Desk) - Japanese police have arrested a 32-year-old woman for placing more than 2,000 fake orders worth billions of yen through a popular online store before repeatedly cancelling them or refusing delivery.
According to Japanese media reports, Mayu Yoshida allegedly used fake names and around 230 fictitious accounts to place the orders on the online store of major Japanese anime company Shueisha.
The orders, reportedly worth around 4.3 billion yen ($2.7 million), included toys and other merchandise linked to popular anime series such as Naruto and One Piece.
Yoshida allegedly selected cash-on-delivery as the payment method for the orders. When the products arrived at her address, she would reportedly refuse to accept or pay for them. In some cases, she allegedly cancelled the orders before they were dispatched.
The repeated cancellations and failed deliveries forced the company to bear delivery and courier costs on multiple occasions.
Japanese media reported that the company suffered losses of around $47,500 as a result of the alleged scheme.
Police have arrested the woman and launched an investigation into the case.
