Sculptor Mark Coreth and his team sculptured a life-size polar bear out of a ten tonne block of ice in Sydney in an attempt to draw attention to global warming. The bear, which took approximately six hours to finish, is not likely to survive for more than a day or two. It will felt in the warm weather of Sydney. The sculptor hopes this slow and painful death will remind people of the plight of the real thing. Coreth got the inspiration for the ice-carving when he was travelling in the Arctic.London-born Coreth has travelled the world with his ice bear sculptures since 2009. He has appeared in Copenhagen, London, Montreal, Toronto and Manchester. Sydney has been his first in the southern hemisphere and the furthest from the Arctic, the polar bears natural habitat.
