Artisans turns trash into massive installation at Mexico's Zocalo
Piece of art reportedly measures 3,000 square metres making it the largest art piece of its kind.
MEXICO (Reuters) - Hundreds of artisans converged on Mexico City’s Zocalo square on Friday (February 5) to turn trash into art, recycling organic and plastic rubbish for a massive carpet-style installation featuring the Aztec’s dog of the afterlife.
According to reports, 200 families from Guanajuato state’s Uriangato region painstakingly put together this piece of recycled art. Items such as bottle tops and corn leaves are hand painted in pre-Hispanic colours to make ‘Xico’, a characterisation of the Xoloitzcuintli dog that according to local belief guided the dead to the afterlife.
This piece of art reportedly measures 3,000 square metres (approximately 9,800 square feet), making it the largest art piece of its kind in the world.
