Housewives holler to win a prize in shouting competition
he winner is someone who can give the best advice on socio-economic issues within five minutes.
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesians have something to shout about in the capital city of Jakarta on Saturday (December 14).
This is a shouting competition though, but who screams the loudest does not necessarily win the prize. The winner is someone who can give the best advice on socio-economic issues within five minutes.
Contestants who are mainly housewives can pick one of three topics to holler about: health, education or child protection. They are forbidden to use curse words or point their fingers.
This is the first time the competition has been held in addition to the festival hosted by Kampung Melayu village office, where the ethnic group of Betawi people in the province are known for their loud voices.
Housewife Sulistywati, who only goes by one name like many Indonesians, is one of the contestants living in one of the densely populated residential areas in North Jakarta. She has been practicing her performance at home during the day in front of the mirror.
Betawi people hail from the city of 10 million people, which is a melting pot of several Indonesian ethnicities.
