Man awarded $7 million for wrongful murder conviction of 19 years

PERTH (Dunya News) – A former public servant has been awarded more than $7 million in compensation for wrongful conviction of 19 years for murdering an Australian police officer.

David Eastman was acquitted of the murder of Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Colin Winchester in a retrial. He had pleaded not guilty in 1993 but received a life sentence two years later.

Eastman had sought between $14m and $18m compensation money under the human rights laws.
