(Reuters) - The findings of a scientific study of a new, spiky-necked dinosaur unearthed in Patagonia were published on Monday (February 04).

The rare fossil was discovered in 2013 and gives a view of one of mother nature’s more interesting animal designs: long, thin spikes shoot up and out from the neck of Bajadasaurus Pronuspinax.

Researchers posit that the spikes would have been covered in keratin much like that found on animals with horns on the planet today.

Bajadasaurus Pronuspinax was a herbivore and researchers believe the spikes were used for self-defense.
