(Web Desk) – The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) inaugurated the Space Applications and Research Center (SPARC-GB) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the region in addressing climate-induced challenges.

The ceremony, attended by researchers, scientists, and students, featured Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan as the chief guest. SPARC-GB is the country’s first space research hub in the northern area and aims to tackle pressing environmental and socio-economic issues, according to a statement from Suparco.

The center will focus on critical challenges such as climate change, glacier melt, and water resource management, positioning itself as a key player in monitoring natural disasters and safeguarding biodiversity in the region.

Suparco Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan emphasised the importance of SPARC-GB as a center for advanced research and innovation, highlighting its potential to create employment opportunities and support community development.

In his address, Khan underscored the region's susceptibility to climate change and the urgent need for enhanced local capacity to address these challenges. He noted that satellite-based monitoring capabilities will be significantly enhanced to better manage environmental issues with the operationalisation of SPARC-GB.

Chief Minister Gulbar Khan acknowledged the center as a crucial step forward in confronting the challenges posed by climate change, particularly the alarming rate of glacier melting, which threatens local water resources and communities.

SPARC-GB aims to deliver vital data on glacier monitoring, landslide risks, and unpredictable weather patterns, thus enhancing the resilience and safety of local communities.

He pointed out the region's vulnerability to natural disasters such as landslides, floods, and earthquakes, stressing the necessity for advanced monitoring systems.

The chief minister urged officials to collaborate closely with Suparco and integrate space technology into regional development efforts.

The center will collaborate with the GB government and international research organizations to provide technological assistance in areas such as disaster management, ecological conservation, and socio-economic development.

As part of Suparco’s Space Education and Awareness Drive, SPARC-GB also intends to inspire young minds by offering dynamic programs and research opportunities, positioning itself as a beacon of scientific excellence and contributing to advancements in both local and global space technology.
