Robot whirlwind set to aid in agriculture
Illinois (Web Desk) – We’ve been building animal-inspired robots for a long time now, scientists at the University of Illinois have created a simple robot that can hop around fields and crops to monitor and report on their health.
Dr Sami Tawfiq and his colleagues have been studying the evolution, physical structure and movement of vortices for many years. They have now created a robot that mimics the jumping vortex. These robots can fill many times their size. Dr. Tawfiq and others have created a robot that opens and closes coils.
The springs and actuators of this robot have gone through several designs. It bounces off the snap buckling process and performs exactly like a vortex. The robot vortex research is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
This robot is designed for hard to reach places and agricultural use. To date Tawfiq has built four models of this actuator, including information about the vortices and the mathematical model itself. Finally, after years of hard work, two models have been approved.
Experts believe that this robot can be used in large fields because drones cannot inspect crops as high as this robot can. Experts can achieve their goals by placing various sensors on it.
