Doomscrolling Is Slowly Eroding Your Mental Health
(Web Desk) - Psychologists have warned of a new state of mind associated with the global epidemic of Coronavirus (Covid 19), calling it "doomscrolling" and saying that it has a number of physical and psychological effects, including nervous tension, depression and other diseases.
The concept of doom scrolling in the latest medical literature means frequent and excessive use of the Internet, news and social media to learn about the virus and especially paying attention to negative news. This has been attributed to hysteria surrounding the virus and people remaining confined to their houses for an extended period of time.
“To keep people up-to-date on the latest global epidemic, most of the major news outlets around the world are providing free information about Covid-19, which can be easily accessed from anywhere”, told Aryan Ling, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at New York University.
"While this has made it much easier to access the latest information about Covid 19, it has also led to a lot of scary and shocking headlines in the media," he explained.
Psychologists say there is no denying the need to keep abreast of the changing pandemic situation, but people with Doom scrolling are badly affected by this. Their eyes are always looking for negative news which they read carefully and accept the psychological effects.
This causes them to suffer from nervous tension, depression, frustration and hopelessness which also affects their ability to think and understand.
