BEIJING (Reuters) - Huawei launched its new chipset Kirin 990 on Friday at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) 2019 held in Berlin, Germany, of which Kirin 990 5G is world’s first 5G SoC.

The SoC (System on a Chip) integrates a mobile phone’s CPU, GPU, memory, communication baseband, and GPS module. The Kirin 990 series includes two models, the Kirin 990 and the Kirin 990 5G. The Kirin 990 5G is the smallest 5G mobile phone chip in the industry, featuring smaller size and lower power consumption.

In addition to the launching in Berlin, Huawei also held a press conference in Beijing to introduce the new product. Ai Wei, vice president of Huawei, said that they started planning for the new chips two years ago.

"It integrates a lot of new technological innovations, so the total number of transistors exceeds 10 billion, or 10.3 billion to be specific. So we have adopted the cutting-edge 7nm+ EUV technology," said Ai.

Ai said that the Kirin 990 5G is the first to integrate the 5G Modem into the SoC, and the Huawei Mate series flagship phone equipped with the Kirin 990 series will be released later this month.
