EU executive had no intention to ban Huawei from operating in Europe despite U.S. pressure.

EU nations will be required to share data on 5G cybersecurity risks and produce measures to tackle them by the end of the year, the European Commission said on Tuesday (March 26), shunning U.S. calls to ban China s Huawei Technologies across the bloc.

Noting that the development of the new telecommunication infrastructures raised concerns about the protection of privacy and trade secrets, European digital chief Andrus Ansip said Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei was on its radar after Beijing passed a law in 2017 requiring its companies to collaborate with its secret services.

EU Security Commissioner Julian King said the EU executive had no intention to ban Huawei from operating in Europe despite U.S. pressure to boycott Huawei, best known to the public as a mobile phone manufacturer.

The British Commissioner said the proposal was about assessing cybersecurity risks, which EU countries would have until the end of June to complete.

Australia and New Zealand have stopped operators using Huawei equipment in their 5G networks.
