It has been determined that the age of this dazzling jewel is about 3.1 billion years old.
(Web Desk) - The largest diamond ever mined in North America and the seventh-largest diamond ever unearthed at 552-carats has been put on display at Phillips Auction House in New York, US, from Thursday to Sunday.
The beautiful yellow diamond was discovered at the Diavik Mine by miners at Dominion Diamond Mines in Canada last October.
It has been determined that the age of this dazzling jewel is about 3.1 billion years old.
It is about the size of a chicken egg.
It is being considered too early to determine the gem s ultimate value as the stone must be thoroughly examined and cut before being graded and sold.
Furthermore, it has yet to be named.
The dazzling jewel and natural wonder is unique in its weight, size, age and color, and particularly for its formation.
Apart from its age, the historic ‘552’ has now been ranked 25th on the list of the world s largest rough diamonds, just ahead of the Lesotho s Letseng Star, weighing 550 carats.
The list of rough diamonds is dominated by stones mined in Africa.
Diamonds form in the Earth s upper mantel, between 90 and 140 miles under the surface, where the ideal temperature and pressure conditions exist for carbon to form strong bonds, creating diamond crystals.
This formation occurs under ancient, large and stable parts of a landmass, called a craton, and most of the diamonds that are found today were delivered to the surface between 2.5 billion and 20 million years ago.
Thanks to the advanced technology which has aided to unearth an outstanding number of large rough diamonds in the last fifty years.
