AOL Instant Messenger to discontinue after December 15
The announcement was made by AOL itself after 20 years of service
(Web Desk) – AOL messenger service “Instant Messenger” or AIM will be discontinued from December 15 onwards after 20 years of programme, the company made the announcement last week.
AOL users will only be able to use the messenger service till December 15 and it will be dead afterwards. The announcement was made through an article regarding Instant Messenger saying the programme is being shut done so that the company can focus on “life-changing products and iconic brands for next generation”.
AOL Instant Messenger users will be unable to connect or sign in the service after December 15. The service lost its popularity with the rise of competitive instant messaging apps like Google Chat, WhatsApp and Viber.
It was amongst the widely used services in the 90s and larger part of 2000s. It had claimed to register over 100 million users during 2001.
