Summary The study found no difference in washing hands from cold or hot water

(Web Desk) – Cold water was found effective in washing away germs, according to science. This reveals that washing hands in hot water may be completely pointless.

Findings of researchers concluded that washing even for 10 seconds kills all bacteria on the hands, irrespective of the temperature of water. Donald Schaffner, professor at Rutgers University, conducted the study and said, “People need to feel comfortable when they are washing their hands but as far as effectiveness, this study shows us that the temperature of the water used did not matter,"

In his study, researchers used 21 participants. They were asked to wash their hands over a period of six months with water of different temperatures. Water was used in 60 -degree, 79-degree or 100-degree temperature with 1 ml or 2 ml volumes of soap. "This study may have significant implications towards water energy, since using cold water saves more energy than warm or hot water," he add.

This study found no difference in washing hands from cold or hot water. Moreover, further study is required on amount of soap, its type and the proper techniques of to remove harmful micro-organisms from the hands.

People are suggested to follow these tips while washing their hands:

  1. Wet hands with running water
  2. Apply liquid, bar or powder soap
  3. Rub hands for about 20 seconds
  4. Scrub all surfaces of the hands. Rub soaps on the wrists, back and between fingers
  5. Rinse well before washing away the soap
  6. Try to dry hands with a clean towel
