Summary

The third and final test between India and South Africa at Newlands - along with the whole test series, has ended in a draw. After being set a target of 340 for victory, the Indian batsman blocked their way to 166/3 off 82 overs. The stalemate has lead to the series being shared 1-1 between the number one and two ranked sides in the world. After an impressive innings victory for the South African side in the first test in Centurion, India then hit back with an equally impressive win in the second test in Durban. Sachin Tendulkar on 14 from 91 balls and VVS Laxman on 32 from 67 balls were the batsmen left at the crease after a frustrating day for South Africas bowlers. The eventual run rate at the close of play was 2.02 per over, with all Indian batsman registering strike rates below 50. The three wickets that did fall ont eh day were shared amongst seamers Dale Steyn (1/43), Morne Morkel (1/26) and Lonwabo Tsotsobe (1/29). The Proteas might well feel disappointed by the result, as they looked fairly positive at the end of day four, with a decent total to challenge for victory against the visitors. They will however take heart from the fact that they still have never lost a test series to India on home soil.Deservingly, Jacques Kallis was awarded both the man of the match and man of the series awards, following his centuries in both innings of this match as well as his unbeaten 201 in the first test.
