Taking 'Mein Chala' too literally; singer Nouman Javaid battling for his life

Dunya News

Artist Noman Javaid was photographed by the hospital staff, which later denied comment

Dunya News Report (Talha Ul Huda)

Lahore based singer and composer Noman javaid was reported to be in a coma, battling for his life at the Ittefaq Medical Complex in Lahore. The circumstances of this ailment were unclear as there have been multiple contradicting reports as to how the ‘Dard e Tanhai’ pop star landed in the Intensive Care Unit.

On Friday, 25th of March 2016, the artist was rushed to the hospital. Sources inside the hospital cite that he was already unconscious with no visible signs of injuries. After initial resuscitation attempts, he was placed under intensive care. The hospital staff refused to reveal whether if he had committed suicide, and his family members also denied comment at first.

A report on the social media surfaced which showed a picture of the singer lying on a stretcher unconscious. This report suggested that the artist had tried to commit suicide under stress but was apparently unsuccessful.

A contradiction arose when on his official Facebook page, a post was generated which stated the suicide report to be a false rumor. The staff member who posted the status stated that the artist had experienced severe suffocation due to a gas leakage at his residence, leading up to his hospitalization and eventual coma.

On March 27, 2016 statements from family sources reeled into the media which informed reporters that Noman Javaid had in fact, been injured in a car accident and was headed towards recovery, and will be making a statement soon. All these contradictory statements suggest that there has been an out-of-the-ordinary occurrence and social media consensus suggests that the initial reports might be true and the singer had probably attempted suicide.

Finally on March 29th, the artist himself took to his Facebook page and informed his fans that he is recovering, and chose to stick with the gas leakage story.

This would not have been the first suicide attempt by an artist in Pakistan, if at all. A number of artists have committed suicide owing to personal, social and occasionally financial pressures. The most influential artist to have committed suicide was the comical actor Rafi Khawar, who committed suicide in 1986. It is speculated that he resorted to this step under the weight of a failing marriage.

Nouman Javaid first came into the lime-light with his solo tracks ‘Dard-e-Tanhai’ and ‘Mein Chala’ in 2008. These tracks topped several music charts in Pakistan and subsequently the singer was approached by the Indian film director and producer Mahesh Bhatt to recreate these tracks and to direct the soundtracks for his 2009 film “Jashn”. The film did fair on the box office but the soundtrack was very well-received and the artist received multiple awards for his performance.

Noman Javaid has collaborated with the iconic singer and his wife Fariha Pervaiz for two solo tracks. He has also been criticized for a commercially flop and controversial music video for a song titled ‘Yamla Pagla Dewaana’, which depicted political riots occurring across the country and it was also comprehended to be a satire directed towards the Pakistani media.

Noman Javaid’s most successful project till date has been the music direction of the 2011 bollywood movie ‘Yamla Pagla Dewaana’, alongside the Indian iconic music director Anu Malik. This movie was a commercial success and Noman Javaid was appreciated for his direction.

Thousands of fans on his social media fan pages have sent in prayers for his recovery after his mysterious accident, an investigation might be held on a first-hand account basis once the artist makes a full recovery.
