At least 31 injured in two-train collision in Sheikhupura

Five injured are said to be in a critical condition

SHEIKHUPURA (Dunya News) - At least 31 passengers including women and children were injured as two trains collided with each other near Qilla Sattar Shah in Sheikhupura district on Sunday, witnesses and rescuers said.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital where five victims are said to be in a critical condition. The Lahore-bound Mianwali Express hit a freight train already parked on the main railway line.

 

According to a Pakistan Railways spokesman, the track was cleared at 7:30am and that the train operations are continuing smoothly in Lahore division.

He said Mianwali Express that met accident resumed its journey after the track was cleared after certain repairs. Railways officials said the incident apparently took place after the officials concerned failed to change the track.     

Four officials including Ferozewala Kundian shed driver Muhammad Imran and assistant driver Muhammad Bilal have been suspended from service after the incident.

Four bogies of a freight train derailed near the same railway station a day earlier.

Former prime minister and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and demanded action against those responsible for the crash.

Inquiry ordered 

The Railways ministry has constituted a high-powered inquiry committee to probe the incident. The committee will submit repeort in 24 hours. Those who were found guily of negligence would be taken to task.
