Surgery in mobile phone light exposes Ganga Ram Hospital facilities

LAHORE (Web Desk) - In a bizarre incident, a team of surgeons at Lahore’s Ganga Ram Hospital had to carry out an operation with the help of a mobile phone flashlight after the operating theatre plunged into darkness due to outage.

The surgeons were operating on a patient’s leg when power outage took place and it remained pitch dark for a while as the generator could not be pressed into service. The doctors had no option but to continue the procedure through the mobile phone flashlight.

The doctors, however, successfully completed the procedure. The alleged negligence of the hospital administration put the patient’s life at risk as there was no alternative arrangement to provide power to the operating theatre.

This is not the first time the Ganga Ram Hospital has hit the headlines for a wrong reason. Reports of power outages during crucial surgeries prompted the authorities to take notice but no arrangements have been made to prevent such a happening.

The medical superintendent, according to media reports, denies having any knowledge of the power outage. He says he will investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Dr Javed Akram has sought a report from the hospital administration. He pledged appropriate action against those responsible for the criminal negligence.
