ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Outgoing Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa held separate farewell meetings with President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The prime minister expressed best wishes for Gen Bajwa, and the army chief thanked the premier.
PM Shehbaz also held a luncheon in honour of the outgoing top general.
President lauds Army Chief’s services in field of defence
The President commended General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s services in the field of defence. He appreciated the outgoing Army Chief’s services for the country and the Pakistan Army.
The President expressed best wishes for General Qamar Javed Bajwa in his future endeavors.
Gen Bajwa is all set to retire on November 29 after completing his six-year stint as Pakistan Army chief.
Gen Bajwa was appointed as COAS on 29 November 2016 by the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif Prime Minister Sharif. After the completion of his first term of three years as the chief of the army staff, General Bajwa’s tenure as army chief was extended for another three years, starting from November 2019 until November 2022, by the former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan.
Army to remain apolitical
In his last public address at the Defence and Martyrs day ceremony, the outgoing army chief expressed that the army will stay away from politics and will perform only constitutional role.
Terming army’s interference in country’s politics as unconstitutional said that a state of confusion was created by creating a fake and false narrative.
He said that the army has decided not to interfere in political affairs, adding that the interference of Army in politics is unconstitutional.
Gen Bajwa said, “I feel proud to have served as the commander of this great army for six years, adding that the peace in cities and villages is accredited to the sacrifices of its martyrs.”
New appointments
Earlier this week, the federal government appointed General Asim Munir as next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza Sunday assumed charge as CJCSC while a ceremony for the change of command will be held tomorrow (Monday).
