The region will suffer if situation in Afghanistan deteriorates: Moeed Yusuf

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf has said that a political solution to the Afghan problem needs to be achieved. The Afghan government, the Taliban and other parties will have to decide, failing which, the situation could worsen in the next month and a half.

Moeed Yusuf said that an attempt was made to pin the blame for the Afghan problem on Pakistan. The Afghan war was a mistake and more mistakes were made. Pakistan has said from day one that there is no military solution to the problem and it wants a road map towards ending the conflict.

"In my personal opinion, it does not seem that matters will be resolved soon," he said. The Afghan government and the Taliban must come to a compromise. If things go wrong in Afghanistan, it will neither be good for the region nor the United States.

"Afghanistan has a history of factions forming there," the national security adviser said. We have repeatedly said that the Afghan government, the Taliban and other parties must make a decision and find a political solution. If there is no political settlement in Afghanistan, the situation could worsen in the next month and a half.

He said that the United States has made up its mind to leave Afghanistan. Pakistan has its concerns on the future of Afghanistan after the US withdrawal, he added.

"The United States will continue to support Afghanistan, but we want a peaceful transition of power there," said Dr. Moeed Yousaf. We do not want the evacuation to lead to a civil war in Afghanistan.

He said that Pakistan worked hard in the Afghan-peace talks and it considers itself Afghanistan’s bigger brother and wants there to be peace. He said that the United States and Afghanistan have been told that Pakistan’s efforts should be recognized.
