ECP expresses disappointment over PM's remarks on Senate polls results
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday has expressed disappointment over the statements of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and federal ministers regarding the voting process and results of Senate polls and said that every party and candidate should have courage to accept its defeat in the elections.
The ECP, in its press release issued after chairing a special meeting to review the allegations leveled by the PM during his address to the nation after facing major upset in the Senate polls, stated that the Constitution cannot be changed to make anyone happy. We listen to everyone’s concern but act as per the law, the panel said.
The national institutions should be allowed to work without any pressure. If there is any disagreement then the person should provide concrete evidence to support his claims instead of maligning the departments, the commission clarified.
The election commission is well-aware of its duties and rejects the criticism, the press release further added.
The development came after PM Imran, in his address to the nation, said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had moved Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) against open ballot in Senate polls to eradicate corruption.
The apex court had urged ECP to use modern technology to ensure transparency in the elections but the commission did not follow and organised the polls as per traditional way. Secret ballot has damaged the democracy in the country, he added.
The premier said ECP could have employed latest technology in order to know who the turncoats in Senate elections were.
