President urges MPs, Media to play role to create awareness about breast cancer

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Like elsewhere in the world, PINKtober is being observed in Pakistan as well to raise public awareness against breast cancer to defeat the disease.

October is internationally celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The month-long campaign allows the issue to be highlighted as a top health priority, with the disease affecting many women in their lives.

During PINKtober, people are urged to wear Pink Ribbons to honour survivors, remember those who lost lives to the disease, and to support the progress that is being made together to defeat breast cancer.

In Pakistan, various government and non-governmental organizations and media houses have planned campaigns about breast cancer. Walks, seminars, and conferences will be held nationwide to apprise people about the disease.

In her video message to mark PINKtober, First Lady Samina Alvi said millions of women die every year for not having proper awareness about the disease.

The First Lady said the disease could prove fatal if not timely diagnosed. She urged women to examine themselves on their own, and if find any problem, they should immediately consult the doctor.

Meanwhile, in letters to Members of Parliaments and media persons, President Dr. Arif Alvi has urged them to play their due role to create awareness about breast cancer in the country.

He appealed to newscasters, anchors and guests to wear pink ribbon in talk-shows.

The President said breast cancer kills millions of women every year. He said about 98 percent of women recover from the disease if diagnosed at an early stage.

He said Pakistan has higher mortality rate than other South Asian countries because of lack of awareness about breast cancer.
