Fawad urges opposition parties to develop consensus over major issues

Democracy demands consensus so that the process of progress and prosperity may continue.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday said that neither the country’s institutions culpable in all matters nor blameless as everyone including judiciary, Army and politicians are susceptible to making mistakes.

Speaking on the floor of the Upper House of the Parliament, he urged the opposition parties to develop consensus over major issues to smoothly run democracy and the country.

The minister said that democracy demands consensus so that the process of progress and prosperity may continue. He also requested the opposition to establish common agenda on major issues including the process of accountability and the election commission.

The minister said the government and opposition should move forward on issues on which consensus can be developed such as the appointment of ECP members, accountability laws and the pending legislation regarding the army chief s tenure.

"The army is not only the PTI s; it equally belongs to the PML-N, Jamaat-i-Islami and the JUI," Chaudhry added.

PTI Leader Faisal Javed said, today, the world’s renowned economic institutions including IMF, World Bank, Moody’s and Bloomberg are acknowledging the improved economic situation of Pakistan due to prudent economic policies of the incumbent government.

The house will now meet again tomorrow at three in the afternoon.

On the occasion, Senator Raja Zafarul Haq said that the first agenda of requisition was the issue of ordinance, adding that the Senate was kept in the dark on the issue of ordinance. Kashmir issue should also be discussed in the session, he said.

The Senator said went on to say that the process of accountability is one-sided and being run illegally, adding that no one is satisfied with the accountability. Opposition gave an agenda for the session, he said and added negative thinking would be behind the exclusion of the agenda.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Senator Raza Rabbani said that the government’s actions have rendered the parliament ineffective as a regular session of the Senate was last held from Aug 29 to Sept 3.

Raising questions on the amendments proposed by the government to the NAB law, Rabbani said that the government has exempted businessmen, bureaucrats, judges and the military from being proceeded against under the law through the amendments.

While suggesting that the parliament should be allowed to try the parliamentarians, he asked whether the NAB law only there for politicians. Rabbani said that there should be “no holy cows” under a fair accountability law.
