ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – In a rankings released by the World Air Quality Index (AQI), Lahore ranked second in the world’s most polluted city as of Oct 29 considering the updated data of the amount of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5.

Indian capital New Delhi ranked first with the average concentration 373, followed by Lahore at 188 AQI in a cubic metre of air. Earlier today, Lahore ranked first for a short period of time in the list of most polluted cities.

Karachi, today, ranked seventh in the air quality index (AQI) with AVG of 153.

According to a report, air pollution is expected to cause around seven million premature deaths globally this year and have a major economic impact.

Lahore’s toxic air is caused by vehicle and industrial emissions, dust from building sites, smoke from the burning of rubbish and crop residue in nearby fields.

Tree harvesting, increasing population and other anti-environment steps have made Lahore one of the most polluted city in the world.

PM2.5, or particles of 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, is so dangerous because it lodges deep in the lungs.

The World Health Organisation sets a daily mean air quality guideline of 25 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre of air.

IQ Air constantly monitors air pollution around the world and updates moment by moment.
