Tenure of local governments in KP to expire on August 28: ECP

Holding of elections within 120 days after expiry of LB tenure is ECPs constitutional obligation.

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - A high-level meeting chaired by Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan, Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad, was held in Peshawar on Tuesday during which different issues pertaining to upcoming local bodies  elections following an expiry of mandatory period of LB organizations in Khyber Pakthunkhwa came under discussion.

The meeting was attended besides others by Secretaries Local Government and Law Khyber Paktunkhwa and senior officials of ECP.

During the briefing, the ECP officers told that tenure of local bodies will expire on August 28, 2019 in KP and under article 140 (A) and Section (4) 219 of Election Act 2017, holding of elections within 120 days after expiry of tenure of local bodies in the province was a constitutional obligation for ECP.

The ECP official said appropriate time is required for delimitation of Constituencies, trainings of staff and preparations of electoral lists before holdings of local bodies  elections in the province.

It is therefore, necessary for KP Government to prepare all necessary work by April 30 so that ECP can fulfil its constitutional and legal obligations within prescribed period.

The representatives of KP Govt told that amendments in existing LG Act have been proposed and the prepared draft would soon be tabled before KP cabinet.
