ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Railways Chairman Mohammad Javed Anwar on Thursday told Senate Committee on Railways department’s profit has soared by whooping Rs35 billion to Rs49.6 billion in the last five years.
During the same period, the deficit of the department mounted merely by Rs7 billion to Rs37 billion.
Anwar told Railways 20-year plan comprising long-term and short-term projects would be soon tabled before federal cabinet.
The Senate body was also told that 9823 bogies—out of 16159 commissioned—have completed service period. The railways official further apprised attendants over 11000 bridges are 100-year-old.
The railways is also seeking technical and financial aid from China to increase speed of the trains from Karachi to Peshawar to 160KM per hour. The cost of the project is estimated at $8 billion.
On the other hand, the apex court has directed to give back land of railways in as many as three weeks. Encroachments on 3000 acres of land have been ended.
