PPP's Murad Ali Shah re-elected Sindh CM

Murad Ali Shah was declared victorious while oppositions candidate Shahryar Mahar faced defeat.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Murad Ali Shah has been re-elected as 27th Chief Minister of Sindh for next five years today (Thursday).

During the session chaired by newly-elected Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, members of provincial assembly cast the votes for their favorite candidate.

After the counting, PPP’s Murad Ali Shah was declared victorious with 97 votes while opposition’s candidate Shahryar Mahar faced defeat.


‘Change in Pakistan is good but people forget their history’


Addressing the House, newly-elected CM Murad Ali Shah thanked the members for trusting him and said that he has followed footsteps of his father who was also Chief Minister of Sindh. He asserted that the country was distributed after the death of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Bringing change in Pakistan is good but people forget their history. They should also remember the black era of dictator Zia-ul-Haq, he added.

The minister said that People voted for PPP despite negative propaganda and that Asif Ali Zardari took forward the country by raising slogan of Pakistan Khapay. I was criticized for focusing only on urban areas but development can be seen in other parts of Karachi, he continued.

The newly-elected Sindh CM said that two-third majority of his party was snatched in election 2018.

Profile of Murad Ali Shah


Murad Ali Shah was born in Karachi on November 8, 1962. He completed his matriculation from Saint Patrick’s High School, intermediate from D. J. Sindh Government Science College and got admission admitted at the NED University of Engineering and Technology.

He got degree of M.Sc. in structural engineering from Stanford University in California.

Murad Ali Shah was earlier elected in the Sindh Assembly in 2002 and completed his tenure until 2007. He served as the project director of Karachi Fish Harbour Authority before getting elected as the member of assembly for the first time.

His father, late Syed Abdullah Shah had served the province in capacity of Chief Minister, Speaker Sindh Assembly and Deputy Speaker. He was also elected a senator in 1991 and remained a member of the House until 1993.

In July 2016, Shah was elected as Sindh Chief Minister. 

Earlier, Sindh Assembly had selected PPP’s Agha Siraj Durrani as speaker after he obtained 96 votes and declared victorious against opposition’s Javed Hanif who got 56 votes.

158 out of 168 members of provincial assembly exercised their voting right.
However, PPP leader Rehana Leghari was made deputy speaker by defeating opposition’s Rabia Azfar Nizami.
