5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes parts of country

LAHORE (Dunya News) – A moderate 5.3 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale hit various parts of the country on Thursday.

The tremors were felt in Faisalabad, Sargodha, Swat, Malakand division, Lower Dir, Manshera and other areas.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 187km with the epicentre Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

No causalities have been reported.

Panic spread across the country and people came out of their residences and workplaces reciting holy Quranic verses.

Earlier on Wednesday, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked northern and northwestern parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The earthquake’s epicenter was along Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region with the depth of 97 kilometers, according to Pakistan’s meteorological department.

At least six children were injured in northwestern Bannu district when the children jumped off the second floor of a school building. This was the second time on Wednesday when earthquake jolted northern and northwestern Pakistan.

Earlier in the morning, the earthquake jolted most parts of northwestern Pakistan. No loss of life and property were reported in the morning jolts.

Pakistan is located on the Eurasian Tectonic Plate, which is known for high levels of seismic activity.
