(Dunya News) – Prisons in Pakistan are overflowing with prisoners according to a recent report released by National Counter Terrorism Authority.

In this report, Punjab ranked at the top with the number of inmates being more than the capacity of the prison. Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa follow Punjab in the ranking. However, in Balochistan the number of prisoners remained less than the space of the prisons.

NACTA’s report indicates that 40 jails in Punjab, which can accommodate 30,740 inmates are overcrowded with 50,405. In total, more than 20,000 inmates are jam packed in those very cells.

In Sindh’s 26 prisons, the prisons can place a maximum number of 12,245 inmates. However, in the report 18,998 were said to be in jails, which means more than 6 thousand inmates are crammed up in the same space.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s 22 jails has the space to accommodate 7,587 inmates while the number of inmates are more than 11,000 in the jails.

Balochistan is the only province where the number of inmates are 2047 less than the capacity of 2585 prisoners inside the 11 prisons.
