JIT constituted to probe firing incident at Justice Ijaz's residence

The residence of Supreme Court judge Justice Ejaz ul Ahsan was fired at twice in 12 hours.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The residence of Supreme Court judge Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan was fired at twice in 12 hours.

In the firing incidents, no human casualties have been reported so far.

After hearing about the incident, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar reached Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan’s residence this morning and condemned the incident.

One incident occurred at night while the other in the morning of Sunday.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan summoned Inspector General of Punjab in this connection and vowed to monitor the situation himself.

Justice Ahsan was part of the five-member bench that heard the high-profile Panamagate case last year that led to the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, the then prime minister.

Lahore High Court Bar Association and Supreme Court condemned the incident and demanded the immediate apprehension of culprits.


Case lodged


Meanwhile, the case of the attack on Justice Ijaz’s residence has been lodged against unidentified persons in Model Town Police Station. Provisions of terrorism and attempt-to-murder have been added in the case.


JIT constituted


Punjab government on Sunday constituted Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the incident. The JIT would be headed by Additional IG Punjab Mohammad Tahir whereas DIG Investigation Sultan Chaudhry, one member each from Military Intelligence, Inter Service Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau, Special Branch and Forensic Agency.


ISPR condemns attack


Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) on Sunday stated that incident of attack on Justice Ijazul Hassin’s residence was condemnable.

In a press release, ISPR urged all stakeholders to continue efforts for restoration of peace.

ISPR also urged to create a safe atmosphere so that state-institutions should play their role effectively.


Attempt to pressurise judiciary


Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Sunday strongly condemned attack on residence of Justice Ijaz Afzal while terming it as an attempt to pressurize judiciary.

Khan took to popular microblogging website Twitter and said, “Strongly condemn the firing at Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan s house. These Sicilian-mafia-like tactics to pressurise senior judiciary are unacceptable in any democracy. PTI stands firmly behind the Judiciary & Rule of Law & this is one reason behind our 29th April Minar-i-Pakistan jalsa”
