After PPP and PTI, MQM backs Sadiq Sanjrani for Senate chairmanship

PTI, PPP among others have already put their weight behind Sadiq Sanjrani.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday announced support for Sadiq Sanjrani—and independent senate-elect from Balochistan—for the vacant slot of Senate chairman.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Balochistan panel and FATA members had already put their weight behind Sadiq Sanjrani.

Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has expressed hope that Sanjrani will receive all the 60 votes whereas FATA senator Hidayatullah has claimed that the candidate will get all the eight votes by them.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on has nominated Raja Zafar-ul-Haq as a party’s candidate for Senate chairman polls. The quaid for life of PMLN—Nawaz Sharif—has received assurance from his allies that they would support candidates nominated by Sharif.

Earlier today, as many as 52 newly-elected Senators took oath during a session in the Upper House.

Senator Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir, who was nominated by the president Mamnoon Hussain to chair the session administered oath to the new members.

As per schedule, the session was adjourned afterwards and will resume at 4:00 pm for the elections of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Senate. The polling would be held via secret ballot.

Following the election, the Senate chairman will take oath, and will then swear in his deputy.
