(Dunya News) – The year 2017 witnessed various landmark rulings by the Lahore High Court on some of the most important cases in recent history.

The Lahore High Court in 2017 gave historic and important verdicts including ordering to make public the Model Town incident inquiry report, halting the transfer of Sharif family-owned sugar mills, ordering implementation of a smog policy, removal of Chairman PEMRA and Chairman PTA and declaring void the formation of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

For the first time in the history of the Lahore High Court, an audit of pending cases took place, the number of which turned out to be 150,000.

Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah also issued orders to ensure provision of needs of lawyers and litigants, including building of IT systems and cafeterias. The Chief Justice also introduced modern courts for women, child courts and reconciliation centres – with all of these projects receiving much recognition.

In 2017, Chief Justice Shah set history by making his assets public.

Despite the successes in 2017, the culture of strikes and the ongoing conflict between the bar and the bench continued. To meet their demands, lawyers continued to resort to protests and sit-ins. And for the first time in the history of the court, arrest warrants were issued for any bar’s president over failure to appear in court over contempt charges.
