7.1 magnitude earthquake jolts parts of country
Earthquake was also felt in neighbouring India and Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk / AFP) - A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of the country including Lahore and Islamabad on Sunday.
The quake was centred near Southern Sumatra, Indonesia at a depth of 54 kilometres, sending people fleeing shaking buildings in Murree, Azad Kashmir, Gujrat and adjoining areas.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has expressed concerns regarding increased chances of landsliding in Khyber Paktunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir affected by floods and torrential rains.
Two labourers were injured in Peshawar as the result of a stampede, one of them succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The roof of a wretched house in Dir Bala fell because of the earthquake.
One person died because of a boulder falling on a car at Buner Road.
The earthquake also hit some areas in India and Afghanistan.
Earlier in October, a 7.5-magnitude quake ripped across Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing nearly 400 people and flattening buildings in rugged terrain.
For many in Pakistan, October‘s quake brought back traumatic memories of a 7.6-magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people and displacing some 3.5 million.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
In Nepal, a quake in April and a strong aftershock in May killed more than 8,900 people.
