KARACHI (Dunya News) – Military court has turned Justice Maqbool Baqir attack case back to the Sindh government due to lack of evidence, Dunya News reported Tuesday.

The provincial government had sent the case to the army court for trial.

On June 26, 2013 security squad of Sindh High Court’s (SHC) Justice Baqir was attacked on Burns Road. The attack claimed police constable’s life among nine persons.

Sources have said that the case has been returned to the government owing to lack of evidence.

Military courts were established in 2015, mainly to try militants after an attack on Army Public School (APC) in December 2014 claimed more than 130 students’ lives.

Different political parties had expressed reservations regarding misuse of the special courts against rival politicians.

However, the government went ahead with the Amendment in the Constitution after addressing parties’ skepticism.

It could also be mentioned here that intelligence agencies had arrested activist of banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Asif Chotu, during an operation in Dera Ghazi Khan on February 23. Chotu was wanted in Justice Maqbool Baqir attack case among several other crimes.

Several cases had been registered against Chotu in Karachi but he remained at large until recently. The extremist had joined banned Sipah-e-Sahaba in the nineties. He was appointed commander of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi in Karachi later on. However, after death of Malik Ishaq, he was appointed Ameer of LeJ.
