Summary

The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday ratified a bill about postponement of the local bodies election in the province for an indefinite period. Provincial Minister of Law Ayaz Soomro tabled Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2010 in the house chaired by Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro. The minister initiating debate on the bill said that the situation has not been conducive for holding local bodies elections in the province due to the devastation wreaked by the deluge. National People's Party member Arif Mustafa Jatoi and Muslim League (Q) member Shaharyar Mahar opposed the bill and demanded announcement of the date of the election instead of indefinite postponement. The opposition members however did not press their demand and the bill was passed by the house unanimously. Members of Sindh coalition partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement were absent from the house, while Awami National Party announced boycott of the ongoing session of the assembly in protest against the deferment of by-elections in PS-94.
