Summary The twins were born on January 14 at a private hospital in Multan.

MULTAN (Web Desk) - Three-week old conjoined twins born in Multan died on Saturday due to pneumonia and infection, Dunya News reported.

Doctors at Multan Children Complex had said the two could not be separated surgically because they had a bacterial infection in their chests and because their hearts, livers and digestive systems were intertwined.

The two girls, daughters of labourer Nazeer Abbas, were born January 14 and doctors there lacked the resources to treat them.

A medical board formed on the directives of Punjab Health Advisor had announced that it was impossible to separate the girls.

Also known as Siamese twins, conjoined siblings are identical twins who in rare cases, about one in 200,000 live births, are born with their skin and internal organs fused together, according to the University of Maryland Medical Centre website.

About half are stillborn, and the survival rate is between five and 25 percent.

They develop from a single egg, which splits in the case of healthy twins, but not fully in the case of conjoined siblings.
