General Sharif was awarded Order of Merit in recognition of his leadership against threats

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – In recognition of his leadership in fight against multiple threats, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has become the first Asian to be awarded Brazil’s coveted ‘Order of Merit’, Dunya News reported.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Sharif has been awarded one of the most honourable awards Order of Merit. Brazil Army’s Commander General Eduardo Villas Boas presented the award on behalf of the Brazilian government in a special ceremony.

The Army Chief is the first Asian to have been awarded this honour. Prior to this, this honour has been awarded to a select few people including United States’ (US) former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

General Sharif also met with Brazil’s Defence Minister and discussed bilateral affairs and security cooperation for the security of the Olympics games set to take place in 2016.

The ISPR said that both countries also agreed to learn from each other’s anti-narcotics drives. Both countries also agreed in enhancement of mutual ties to deal with the security challenges.
