PBA Chairman expresses concern over PEMRA's statement
Government should refrain from violating article 19 of the constitution, said the statement
LAHORE (Dunya News) -- Chairman Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) expressed concern over statements of Acting Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Thursday. The association says that the government wants to control media through its own rating company, reported Dunya News.
In a statement issued by PBA, it was said that association s position on rating company is clear from the first day that such tactics will undermine citizens right to access to information under article 19 of constitution. PBA also refuted claims of Acting Chairman PEMRA regarding consultation with all stakeholders. It was also made clear that PEMRA or Ministry of Broadcast and Information was not consulted regarding any talk with stakeholders.
According to PBA, efforts to regulate the print media did not yield significant results. Government should learn from the mistakes of the past, according to statement. Reiterating support of implementation of the recommendations of the media commission, PBA said that PEMRA should be made independent and there should be clear and transparent distribution of advertisements. Government should refrain from violating article 19 of the constitution, said the statement.
